Police: No victim found in shooting at Mall of America

The Mall of America in suburban Minneapolis was shot at on Thursday, sending shoppers scurrying for cover, but police said they did not immediately discover a victim.

Following the scene’s security just before 6 o’clock, Bloomington police added that they were still looking for a suspect. The mall would not reopen on Thursday, they said, adding that a lockdown that had caused some customers to hide in place while others left was in the process of being removed.

Social media videos of what appeared to be a man ranting as he walked close to the Nike shop in the complex appeared to contain at least three bullets.

The mall, which first opened in 1992, is the biggest in the country and a popular tourist and gathering place.

Shoppers were captured on camera running out from the indoor theme park at the ground level of the massive mall while clutching their luggage and grasping the hands of their kids. Another video showed customers hurriedly leaving the mall’s expansive interior atrium area as well as two police officers, one of whom was armed with a rifle, rushing through the shopping centre.

One floor underneath the Nike store, Trent Turner, a salesman at a DSW shoe store, claimed to have heard gunfire while standing close to the rear. Then, he continued, “I saw everyone stampeding toward the back.”

A mother stated that as she and her daughter, 17, were looking for outfits for their high school senior pictures, the store manager instructed them to “go as far back as possible.” The woman claimed to be with her daughter in a dressing room. Another user shared video of what appeared to be dozens of people gathered in the basement as repeated announcements to “please shelter immediately” blared from mall speakers.

The Associated Press was informed by a lady who only went by the name Tara that she and a friend were among the many individuals that raced down a hallway to leave the mall.

We were in the Lululemon store when she described the incident. “I just saw people running, and he was in the changing room. I started banging on the door to get him to come out, but he didn’t have a shirt on, so we just raced out of there,” she said.

According to the Mall of America’s website, firearms are not permitted on the property. Customers are not inspected upon entry to the mall and there are no metal detectors there. On New Year’s Eve, there was a shooting that left two persons injured after what appeared to be a fight.
