Actress and singer Nichelle Nichols, died at 89 

Her son, Kyle Johnson, announced her death in a statement posted on her Facebook page.

She was widely praised for breaking down barriers in an era when Black women were rarely seen in prominent TV roles. 

She shattered stereotypes to become the first Black woman to act in a major role on a primetime television

Like other original cast members, Nichols also appeared in six big-screen spinoffs starting in 1979 with Star Trek

She also served for many years as a NASA recruiter, helping bring minorities and women into the astronaut corps.

Her son reveals the cause of death to be natural one.
