Why Brittney Griner is  sentenced to Jail

Texan basketball star Brittney Griner sentenced to 9 years after being found guilty in Russian drug case

Griner pleaded guilty to the charges last month and apologized for the incident, calling it an “honest mistake.”

During sentencing, Judge Anna Sotnikova said she had found that Griner intentionally broke the law and also fined her 1 million rubles

Griner reacted to the sentence with little emotion, listening to the verdict with a blank stare on her face.

Griner’s allies remain hopeful President Joe Biden will secure a prisoner swap for her release, as he did with another Texan, ex-Marine Trevor Reed.

She has played for the Phoenix Mercury since the 2013 draft, along with basketball in China and Russia during the offseasons.
